There are different learning styles. I learned by doing. In fact, I spent 30 years conducting investigations for top civil plaintiff, and criminal defense attorneys building cases for trial and settlement.

Much of my work involved being in dangerous areas, and walking up unannounced to total strangers homes, knowing little about who was in the house, or what weapons might have been in there.

I'd knock on the door, introduce myself, and then interview them about something pretty bad they had witnessed.

Investigators seldom are needed when something good happens, so I got used to dealing with people who were on edge emotionally.

During that time, I worked on hundreds of cases, involving violence. I got to see up close the worst that people can do to each other 100xs over.

While some of those cases were criminal defense cases, others were against businesses where the violence occurred since few businesses try to prevent violence.

Not only did I learn how real life violence happens, but I learned through assessing the information I developed during my investigations how it could have been prevented.

One night while I was working, I took a coffee break, and headed towards a Winchell's Donuts shop in Santa Monica, California. Santa Monica had a lot of homeless people at the time, and I knew from my work, that living on the streets is dangerous.

As I walked up the street, I saw a man move off of a fence where he'd been leaning, onto the sidewalk, about 20 feet in front of me. Suddenly, I saw a flash of light reflect off of something metal in his hand. I realized that I was walking right towards someone who was likely carrying a weapon in his hand.

But, since I saw the flash of light before I reached him, I had time to develop a plan, and that was to keep walking even if he tried to block my path.

As I reached where he was, he asked me what time it was, a good ploy, because most people will stop to look at their watch and engage.

I saw at that time that he was holding a sharpened metal rod "a shank" in his hand. I didn't want to set him off, so I told him the time, but kept on walking.

I realized right then, that seeing the flash of light on the metal, gave me enough advanced warning to come up with a plan to keep safe. And practicing situational awareness from then on became the most important safety technique. And de-escalation a second go too.

Around 1999, I began teaching how to conduct effective litigation investigations to attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, and became a regular guest instructor at the University of New Mexico Law School teaching clinical program students the ins and outs of case preparation investigation.

I later trained and taught a variety of martial arts. And I studied how the allied forces during WW2 trained the men and women they put behind enemy lines to work with the local resistance.

My attorney clients, aware of my safety skills, began reaching out to me to teach workplace violence prevention and personal safety to their staff. That led to training court administrators and staff and the staff of a United States Senator, as well as businesses of all types. 

I feel blessed to have been able to mix my two passions, helping people who are going through a difficult time, and helping people be safe from violence.
